Fostering Civil Discourse During and Beyond the 2024 Election

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2024 | 9 am - 3pm PST

Museum of Tolerance, 9786 W. Pico Blvd. Los Angeles, 90035 (parking is free)

How can educators create a space for students to engage in reflective and critical conversations about the issues brought up in the 2024 election?

The divisive rhetoric of the United States’ election process has shown us that we must figure out how to talk—and listen—with civility and respect.

These skills are vital to the health of civil society and the future of Democracy.

  • Museum of Tolerance Interactive Tours feature exhibits that highlight the humanity that connects us all, plus the opportunity to have professionally facilitated tough conversations on controversial topics.
  • Facing History and Ourselves will provide strategies designed to help students learn to listen respectfully to different opinions and experiences, try out ideas and positions, and give—and get—constructive feedback without fear or intimidation, the essential skills for civic participation and democratic dialogue.

By participating in this workshop, educators will...

1. Explore teaching strategies and curricular resources from Facing History and the Museum of Tolerance to integrate into your classroom.

2. Receive a Certificate of Professional Development Hours

This interactive workshop is for teachers, curriculum specialists, school administrators and all school personnel. Lunch and materials are included for FREE.

This workshop is a collaboration of the Museum of Tolerance, Facing History And Ourselves with grant funding from the California Teachers Collaborative for Holocaust and Genocide Education, and support from the California Department of Education.
