What does Woody Guthrie, writer of “This Land Is Your Land” the most influential folk singer of his generation inspiring the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen have in common with blintzes, knishes and Hanukkah songs? A whole lot more than you could possibly imagine.

Just hearing the name Woody Guthrie conjures images of Dust Bowl Refugees but Woody extended his horizons far beyond the Oklahoma hills of his youth. And once his wanderings and ramblings brought him to New York City in the 1940s, he was introduced - both personally and professionally - into a vibrant Jewish culture that he wholeheartedly embraced and which, ultimately, had a deep influence on his life and his music.

Dust Bowls and Jewish Souls tells a rich and colorful story of the  transformative relationship Woody Guthrie had with prominent Yiddish poet and future mother-in-law Aliza Greenblatt which  cultivated a whole other side of the artist, connecting him to Jewish history and culture. Guthrie, who once had zero knowledge of Hanukkah or Passover, now wrote songs about latkes, borscht, and the Holocaust.
