Professional Development for Law Enforcement
Designed to assist front line service providers examine both the historical and contemporary contexts for challenges they’re facing on the job. Through facilitated Museum tours and discussions, interactive workshops, and live testimonies from survivors, our courses are specifically designed to increase awareness, both introspectively and professionally, develop and grow leadership skills, and learn new tools that can be used on the job.
All courses are POST certified and covered under POST Plan IV.

Changing Role of Law Enforcement
Changing Role of Law Enforcement, the core law enforcement/criminal justice professionals course, is designed to explore the evolving role of law enforcement/criminal justice professionals in our increasingly diverse and complex society. Utilizing the interactive museum exhibits, participants will learn about and engage with the concepts of racism, bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination in both historical and contemporary contexts. Facilitated discussions around tolerance, diversity and personal values and responsibilities, allow for self-reflection and an opportunity to explore what that means for them as law enforcement/criminal justice professionals.

Beyond Diversity: Integrity as a Tool for Building Community Trust
Beyond Diversity: Integrity as a Tool for Building Community Trust builds on the concepts and tools introduced in the Changing Role of Law Enforcement course. Law enforcement/criminal justice professionals will examine why professionalism doesn’t always translate to trust; what is integrity and how can we best demonstrate our level of integrity to the community to build trust; and introduces the Three Culture Model - a tool that will assist law enforcement/criminal justice professionals in understanding how a person sees the world and communicates rather than how a person is viewed by the world. This training focuses on advanced skills that will enhance officers' understanding and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and worldviews.

Tools for Tolerance® Supervising Line Staff
One of the most influential groups of people in law enforcement are the first-line supervisors. They have a direct impact on the people they supervise, on how policies and procedures are perceived and applied, and are often the most visible and accessible leader in law enforcement/criminal justice professionals.
As new leaders, they have to evolve their relationships with individuals who used to be colleagues and forge strong relationships with the leaders above them. This offers a new and unique set of challenges first-line supervisors must overcome. This course assists first-line supervisors in gaining key leadership skills and how to infuse those skills into their new role.
Curriculum highlights:
- Identifying challenges and building relationships with both subordinates and leadership.
- Building character to improve effectiveness and the role of popularity in leadership.
- Managing challenges and how to give effective feedback, positive or negative.
- Practical application practice through role-play.
*This course is open to Sergeants, Field Training Officers, and non-sworn supervisors.

Tools for Tolerance® Command Staff
Tools for Tolerance® for Command Staff is a course designed to address the unique challenges faced by law enforcement/criminal justice command level professionals and craft appropriate responses to complex issues. Today’s leaders are tasked with mastering leadership skills that will enhance trust and performance of those they supervise. Participants will explore new tools to help create supportive environments for their personnel and build on the knowledge, skills and experiences participants already have.
Curriculum highlights:
- Museum experience: Holocaust, Social Lab, and Anne Frank exhibits
- Personal testimony from a Holocaust survivor
- Change: internal/external issues and obstacles
- Spectrum of Tolerance, trust, and implementing new tools
*This course is open to Lieutenants, Captains, Commanders, Chiefs, and non-sworn equivalents.
Length of training: 16 hrs. -
Hate Crimes for First Responders
Hate Crimes for First Responders is designed specifically for those officers who are responsible for responding to hate crimes/incidences and meets the training requirements outlined in PC 13519.6. It provides up to date information to assist officers in the safe and successful handling of hate and bias motivated crimes or incidents. Utilizing real-life scenarios, participants will discuss the unique dynamics of hate crimes/incidents.
Curriculum highlights:
- Hate Crime vs. Hate Incident and related laws
- Investigating and reporting hate crimes/incidents
- Victim dynamics, preventing hate crimes/incidents, and community impact
- Typology of offenders
Length of training: 8 hrs. -
Racial and Identity Profiling Train-the-Trainer
Racial and Identity Profiling Train-the-Trainer is the official certification course for the POST mandated Racial and Identity Profiling training. This course is designed to engage the State of California’s peace officers in understanding P.C. Section 13519.4 and the 2015 A.B. 953 update, to include identity profiling. In this course, students will explore how explicit and implicit biases, prejudices, and stereotypes can impede effective law enforcement practices; how to apply the 4th and 14th amendments during evidence-based stops to prevent racial or identity profiling; historical events that have negatively impacted communities and police-community relationships; and strategies they can apply to build trust and enhance police-community relationships. At the conclusion of the course, students will demonstrate proficiency by participating in a teach-back exercise evaluated by the training staff.
Length of training: 24 hrs. -
Racial and Identity Profiling Update
Our Racial and Identity Profiling Update training satisfies the P.C. Section 13519.4(i) requiring California Peace Officers to complete a refresher course every 5 years. This 4-hour course examines the key concepts of biases (explicit and implicit), prejudices, and stereotypes; the 4th and 14th amendments during evidence-based stops; and an interactive video exercise.
